Any person or contractor wishing to remove, perform work on, or perform any work within 50 feet of a street tree is required to obtain a permit from the NYC Departments of Parks and Recreation. Common examples of work on or around a tree include installing a sidewalk, driveway or utility line, pruning a tree, hanging holiday lights, or extending the current tree planting space.
